While many who have not already completed the project view it with dread and fear, most students who have been through it will tell you it benefitted them in many ways.
Almost all students faced challenges in completing their project but most will tell you that obtained useful skills because of it.
Senior Clara Johnson said, “It helped me with my research skills.”
The senior project is a great way to showcase skills obtained throughout high school and prepare for college. Universities expect students to already know how to present in front of an audience, format a paper, correctly cite sources, and perform research. These are all tasks used in the senior project.
Senior Ellie Mohn said, “It helped me with my public speaking skills.”
The senior exploration not only prepares students for college by teaching them new skills but also giving them incentive to stay motivated through their senior year.
Most seniors would agree that it is easy to become lazy in the last year, especially if they have already been accepted to college. The work load of the senior project simply does not provide time to get behind. If a student keeps a positive work effort for the senior project, they will most likely be motivated in the rest of their classes.
“The senior exploration helped me prioritize and have better time management skills,” said senior Jonathan Callahan.
The freedom of topic choice allows students to explore future career options if they so choose.
Senior Chris Denson said, “The project taught me what I need to conquer to achieve my career goals.”
For most students that choose to do their project on a career field their interest to go into that field is either strengthened or weakened by their research. Some students will find out more about a possible career choice and want to pursue that career more but for some, the new information makes them want to pursue it less.
While it is easy to complain about the senior project, students should try to value what all they have gained during the process. Not all schools have something like this in place and all students should feel privileged to attend a school that allows this opportunity.
The senior exploration prepares students for college and life beyond. If taken full advantage of, the senior project can allow a student to learn more about a topic they are passionate about, skills that will always be useful to them, and who they are as a person.
