The senior exploration, known to most students as the senior project, is one of the most influential parts not only of senior year, but the entire high school experience.

While many who have not already completed the project view it with dread and fear, most students who have been through it will tell you it benefitted them in many ways.

Almost all students faced challenges in completing their project but most will tell you that obtained useful skills because of it.

Senior Clara Johnson said, “It helped me with my research skills.”

The senior project is a great way to showcase skills obtained throughout high school and prepare for college. Universities expect students to already know how to present in front of an audience, format a paper, correctly cite sources, and perform research. These are all tasks used in the senior project.

Senior Ellie Mohn said, “It helped me with my public speaking skills.”

The senior exploration not only prepares students for college by teaching them new skills but also giving them incentive to stay motivated through their senior year.

Most seniors would agree that it is easy to become lazy in the last year, especially if they have already been accepted to college. The work load of the senior project simply does not provide time to get behind. If a student keeps a positive work effort for the senior project, they will most likely be motivated in the rest of their classes.

“The senior exploration helped me prioritize and have better time management skills,” said senior Jonathan Callahan.

The freedom of topic choice allows students to explore future career options if they so choose.

Senior Chris Denson said, “The project taught me what I need to conquer to achieve my career goals.”

For most students that choose to do their project on a career field their interest to go into that field is either strengthened or weakened by their research. Some students will find out more about a possible career choice and want to pursue that career more but for some, the new information makes them want to pursue it less.

While it is easy to complain about the senior project, students should try to value what all they have gained during the process. Not all schools have something like this in place and all students should feel privileged to attend a school that allows this opportunity.

The senior exploration prepares students for college and life beyond. If taken full advantage of, the senior project can allow a student to learn more about a topic they are passionate about, skills that will always be useful to them, and who they are as a person.

  1. Great Article, even though I'm not a senior it's influential but also stressing for other people

  2. I'm glad we get to choose our own topic for it but I dread doing it. I'm gonna protest, HARD.

  3. I'm doing my senior project this semester and so far I feel a bit stressed only because due to the snow storms we had, it's like we are trying to rush to get it done, on top of everything we else we have to do for English.

  6. I enjoyed this article. I am definitely nervous for my senior project, even though i still have a year or two, to worry about it. This year, i know someone who did his senior project last semester, and he never did exceptionally well in class, but he made it by. He was worried he would do well at all on the project, but I had faith in him. I was there when he presented, and watched him from outside the door, and he did a great job. He got a fantastic grade, and I was so happy for him. Great article, Ashley! I liked that it shows the stress students go through..

  8. This was a great idea for an article because senior project can be stressful on some seniors because you have to have everything in by a certain date in order to get a good grade.

  10. Ashely, you are an excellent writer. Senior project is another great topic because, of course, it seems to affect everyone.

I am more than hopefully that senior project won't be nearly as stressful as stated.

  11. I'm in the middle of my senior project right now. It isn't a lot of work now but I am sure it will get worse! I think it's an important thing to do as a senior going on to a unversity or college. It's also fun because you get to choose your topic!
