March is finally here, and to most people that means summer is around the corner. But for all of the basketball fans, it means one thing: March Madness!
March Madness, if you don’t already know, is when the best 68 college basketball teams go one on one in a tournament to decide who is the best team in the nation.
UCLA holds the current record with 11 national championships, and John Wooden has coached and won 10 of the 11. Kentucky is second with seven national titles, and Indiana and North Carolina both have five national championships.
Coming into the 2011-2012 year all the big talk was the big guys down low for North Carolina, Ohio State and Kentucky. The big guys down low are the most important in college basketball because all of the kids in college can’t shoot as well as NBA shooters. So they have a big man down low to block shots, make shots and force the bad shot from outside.
At the beginning of the year North Carolina was the top ranked seed with a stacked team and everyone was feared of them and knew that they were the team to be national champions. With a big team of John Henson who can block shots, Tyler Zeller who can make all the shots down low, Harrison Barnes, who is a deadly shooter from anywhere, and Kendall Marshall who can pass the ball better than John Stockton.
Little did people know that the Kentucky Wildcats would creep up to the number one spot for a long time, to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats have two freshmen who can do it all and are just outstanding, Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. For me I remember watching Michael play when he was in high school and he was amazing. He could do anything he set his mind to, but I never heard of this kid, Anthony. Anthony is a big player and he can play defense, and can make some shots just as well.
In college basketball there is always an upset team to watch, or Cinderella team. This year we don’t have just one we have multiple teams. Such as Baylor with there ability to knock down shots and play critical defense. Louisville who made a surge in there conference, but wasn’t the best. Louisville has star players and they can move the ball like no other team. Florida St. who beat Duke to get into the ACC championship game, then beat North Carolina to win the ACC championship.
Last but not least the sleeper Creighton, they have probably the best player in the nation, Doug McDermott. Creighton has the best field goal shooting team in the nation with .509%; they can absolutely shoot the ball from anywhere and make it! Mostly because Doug takes all of the shots, with a field goal of .610%. That means that if Doug takes 100 shots from half court he will make 61 of them. That is insanely crazy! This year Doug is only a sophomore but he averages one of the most points in the nation with 24. So fill out your brackets quick and look for these teams on them.
