Decoder is one of the newer bands in the hardcore scene. They have been signed to Rise Records, and have already made a name for themselves among other bands on the label. They have quite a bright future ahead of them after just releasing a self entitled debut album.
Lately bands among this genre are trying to expand themselves, and create something deeper than just heavy guitar work and breakdowns; Decoder does a fabulous job of achieving this.
Decoder got their start about a year ago, the majority of the band being ex-Oceana members. Making it easy to see where a lot of their inspiration stems from. Ambience is in abundance on this album. They take trance-like vocals and mix it with dark yet hopeful lyrics, having each song stand for a dominant meaning, usually pertaining to the betterment of oneself. “They are definitely different than any hardcore band out there, and it shows drastically.” said Junior Blake Bailes.
The guitar work is inventive at times, but sadly falls short of anything truly memorable. In fact when it comes to the musical aspect of this album, I hardly take it into consideration. The unforgettable parts of this album are the stand out vocal performances, usually with more clean vocals than screamed vocals, and the lyrics themselves.
When it comes to Decoder, they are a fresh change of pace among hardcore bands, and can easily get a trend of followers from this solid debut album. Though they lack creativity at times, they make up for it with astounding content that goes much deeper than their sound.
