Twenty years. That’s how old one of the biggest franchises in gaming is this month. Pokemon has left a mark in many people’s lives and memories since 1996.

The series was made by Satoshi Tajiri. You play as characters known as “Pokemon Trainers,” with each game having its own storyline. You can trade, battle, and compete with other players in each of the games in the series.

The first pair of games came out for the Nintendo Game Boy. “Pokemon Red” and “Pokemon Blue” made it onto shelves in 1996 and were the start of one of the largest game franchises still around today. It is the second most successful video game-based media franchise, right behind Mario.

It was developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The franchise has now branched off from not only video games, but card games, toys, TV shows and movies, and comic books. The media franchise alone has made over $37 billion as of 2013.

Fans are now excited after Nintendo announced that a new type of Pokemon game would be coming out this year, Pokemon GO. Pokemon GO is going to be an augmented reality game for Apple and Android mobile devices. The game will allow its players to capture, collect, battle, and train virtual Pokemon in the real world.

Different Pokemon types will be featured in different areas of the world. Grass types would be found in open fields and woods, while water types will be found at places like the beach. It has been announced as a free-to-play game, but no release date has been set.
