Wake up St. James
by Julianna Natali
Guns, knives, fights and drunk driving? Underage kids at our high school, and those surrounding it, are becoming dumber and dumber at local get-togethers.
First of all, high school students are already breaking the law by underage drinking. This is punishable by law and if you don’t get carted away in the paddy wagon, you get a pretty hefty fine to pay. Also, if you’re caught drunk driving as a minor your license gets taken away until you’re 21.
If you get a ‘minor in possession of alcohol’ ticket, it will stay with you forever unless you get a lawyer and have it expunged from your record. News flash: colleges look at your record. They don’t want some hooligan entering their university to encourage drinking and partying.
But really, the biggest problem I’ve noticed lately is the blatant disregard for personal safety and the safety of others. I don’t understand why a 17 or 18 year old student feels the need to carry a firearm with them to a party as protection. Sophomore Jessica Real said she “wouldn’t feel safe if one of her friends carried a gun.” And I don’t blame her.
One: if the safety is off you could easily shoot yourself in the leg, arm or stomach and end up hospitalized. Imagine if that gun goes off during the party, all your peers and friends are going to be arrested because your idiotic self doesn’t know what a safety is.
Two: if you get into an altercation with some fellow from another school I highly doubt the reasonable reaction is to pull out your Saturday-night special and unload it into your opponent or shoot it into the air to scare him. You’re probably in a drunken stupor and the cops are going to get called. If you think otherwise then you really are dumber than I thought.
Three: Say you’re driving home from the party and you get pulled over because you’re driving on the wrong side of the road like a drunken moron and they search your car and see your piece hangin’ out under the seat. Sorry buddy, but unless you’ve got a license to carry that thing you’re going to jail.
We all live in Surfside Beach, Socastee, and Murrells Inlet. There is nothing gangster or dangerous about these areas, I assure you. You do not need a weapon for protection. If you’ve caused enough trouble for yourself and your friends that you need weaponry then you probably deserve to be in jail.
The only thing that can come from this excessive, and stupid, amount of protection is jail time. I don’t care how careful you think you’re being. If you have a gun then the temptation to use it is staring you in the face. And if you carry it on you at all times at every party you go to, then you definitely will use it because you probably have “beef” with half the people at that party.
Furthermore, if you are such a coward that you need to hide behind a gun in order to make yourself seem tough then you obviously need help. Clearly you lack self esteem and I’m forced to call your sanity into question.
My question to you St. James is what is the point of all this? After reading this article I sincerely hope that you open your eyes to the people you decide to hang around with. If they act like this at any party you attend then you are a ‘grade A’ idiot for sticking around. The only place you’re going by being their friend is jail or the grave.

I don't understand why anyone feels the need to carry a gun, unless you're a cop or something like that. When I went to my old school this kid brought a gun to school to scare this other kid that was bullying him and he accidently shot him self in the leg, in class, he lost his full ride scholarship for basketball. So really St. James it is not worth it. I'm glad you wrote this, it takes a lot of guts to write out about this. Great article Julianna!
Great article Julianna! Being aware of who you hangout with is very important and hanging with the wrong people can put you in bad places.
I don't know why people have such risky behavior. Especially when they are so close to graduating high school. It's important to be in good company. Awesome article.
It's sad because this happens all the time and it's so stupid. Like, why do you even think of bringing a gun to a party or even school when your obviously going to get in trouble? I seriously just don't get what goes through people's heads anymore at our school. This is an amazing article Julianna, great point!
Great article Julianna! It's so stupid for minors to risk their future just to have a night they won't remember.
This article is big. The topic is a huge thing to cover, and you displayed it wonderfully. You gave facts and your own opinion in a clever way. Great job Julianna.
Really good topic and great writing. I know tons of people that have gotten arrested for drunkeness. I think kids around here grow up too fast.
This was such a good idea to do an article on! I love it! Great job.
Great article Julianna. I think it is important also for teens not to risk their futures even if they are probobly going to have a bright future.
I hate kids that think their thugs. They should all get arrested
Good job. I agree with what you say. I don't think there is anything gangster or thug about where we live, I know a ton of people that drink and drive all the time and those people are just asking for trouble. If your going to drink, no ones going to stop you, just don't be an idiot about it. I think you did a great job on this article and conveyed your message clearly. Good job!
