Prom just isn't the same
by Shelly Quintana
Many students are excited about prom, especially the girls who are even more ecstatic to get a $700 dress to wear for one night. As for people who don’t know, prom has finally been announced that it’s going to be at the Debordieu Club located at 908 Bonnyneck Drive, Georgetown, SC.
A big question is why it is so far when the majority of St James students live here in the St James area or Socastee. It doesn’t make sense as to why it’s so far, not only do you have to buy this expensive ticket but you also have to fill up your gas tank to get to the location as well.
My personal question is why is prom so important? I looked at generations about prom and it is all the same thing, a dance for all the seniors to look forward to on their senior year before they graduate. But now get back to our present time; it’s not like that anymore.
Today’s generation of prom isn’t the same at all, majority of students go for the after party or they go to look and act like a princess for one day. I understand that they cut enough slack for the juniors to attend prom but I find it irrelevant that any freshman or sophomore gets to go because they want too. The whole purpose is waiting for your senior year so you can enjoy the concept of prom. I guess I’m not the only one who feels this way because according to senior Yasmin Escamirosa she said “I am a senior and all, but to me prom just doesn’t sound or look as cool as it used too”.
I have heard several students say the same thing “Do we get that day excused for prom? I mean I need hours to do my hair and what not.” Here’s what I think, you’re going to a room that’s five thousand miles away, everyone is going to be there, meaning it is packed and people are either dancing and sweating or just sweating from so many people being in the same room. Why do you need to spend time doing your hair for it to either frizz up by the time it ends or for someone or something to mess it up by the time you go home? That’s a waste of time, and a waste of money paying someone to do it obviously they are going to charge you more because its prom season.
As for the whole concept about the dress, over my dead body would I be caught buying such an expensive dress to wear for one day? Especially if you’re not the one paying for it I feel bad for the parents who have to pretend there’s a money tree in their back yards to afford something like that.
Prom just isn’t the same as it used to be, and it loses its value as time keeps ticking.

Prom isn't about a 700$ dollar dress! That is a personal choice,as is their right to do so.Getting ready for the Prom is such an excitment as well as stressful, but to step back and look at yourself looking as beautiful as you wanted to be,that is priceless.Smiling for the camera while your parents and grandparents take pictures of you while hiding tears of joy, that also is priceless.Prom is and should be about celebrating the end of four hard working years in High School.Seniors do not celebrate it alone,us parents do it also.Prom is about making memories, life is about making memories. Ten years from now,no one will care how sweaty you looked or how messy your hair was at the end the night.Ten years from YOU will look back and wish you could do it all over again. I agree, that no student should drive so far in order to celebrate such wonderful night.I do not know who plans the prom, but maybe next year you can have speak up about this problem. To end my very long comment,I wish all the Seniors a fun safe night.Smile, take pictures, hugs your friend and dance your way into the night :)
I totally agree with this article Shelly. Number one, the tickets are crazy expensive. Number two, dresses are crazy expensive and number three, who holds prom so far away from their school? Tickets, really? SIXTY dollars for what four housr? Dresses lets say 200-300 dollars, for FOUR HOURS. Georgetown, seriously? That is beyond far. Back in the day prom was held in the gym. What happened to that? Now its all about money and wo has the most of it. It makes me sick.
If you went to the prom 2 years ago, my sophomore year, when it was only 10 minutes away from the school, you'd realize why they decided to put it at debordeiu. The old location was bad and trashy and poorly decorated. And those who spend hundreds of dollars on dresses and hair and makeup obviously can, but prom doesn't have to be that expensive. I got my dress for 150 and I can and will wear it again. If you put your tickets on layaway then you only pay 50 and you pay over a period of time so it doesn't hurt your wallet as much. Prom is a night for a girl to dress like a princess because that's what you're supposed to do. It's a high school tradition and honestly I think that in this school some people don't take it seriously.
