Is five days not enough?

by Shelly Quintana
Just to inform most high school students in the Horry County district, the limit for absences in school is three days. Yet, schools around Horry County still give you five unexcused days to get yourself together before failing. However, there are many students in every school that are already on truancy or have failed a class due to their absences. If not, students are working their way to the failing area of their school days.

The fact of the matter is this, schools have too many careless students that don’t pay attention to their days or they either have ways of getting false notes saying they have been somewhere to excuse the fact that the student did not want to go to school that morning.

Schools around are doing a good job failing students because of their absences. If five days isn’t good enough than someone needs to take you out of the school and at that point, the student is entitled to waste their day doing whatever they please.

Recently there have been several classes I have attended with several students who were currently trying to switch out of the class because they failed due to their absences. I asked a classmate Whitney Lowell why she had failed the other and, in her opinion, was the five days not enough and she said “I understand five days should be enough, but the school could be more considerate of notes.”

Although the grades were not slipping it’s still important to keep up with your classes and the days allowed missed throughout the school year. Many people and students complain that five days is not long enough for someone to miss and come back, those five days are only unexcused five days. As the student, you are allowed to miss how ever many days throughout the year as long as they’re excused. Such as doctor’s appointments/visits, dentist appointments, or even court dates students may need to attend.

However you still need to keep up with your excuses and make sure they are turned in on time so no classes are failed. Now for the students who skip all the time and then go to make up school, that doesn’t help at all. What part of five days is not understood? If you want to skip make sure you have the room to skip, whatever smoking people do on their free time can wait until 3:15PM after school ends and the day is theirs to spend. If someone is concerned about prom because the time needed to get ready is eight hours than keep up with your days so you can spend up to ten if necessary without worrying your going to fail a class.

Failing a class for a mistake isn’t exactly the best way anyone wants to fail their class. The moral of the story is, keep up with your days! The schools are nice enough to give you five instead of three, waste them on the right thing.

I completely understand that the school gives us five days and i'm thankful for that but the school needs to understand that some people get sick a lot and a lot of people dont have the insurance to go to the doctor for every little thing. I get migranes a lot and my parents are not going to take me to the doctor for something like that because the doctors cant do much for that. I honestly feel that if the school was more accepting to parent letters the drop out rate would decrease, because once you are over those five days a lot of kids just say screw it i've already failed, why keep trying. Great article Shelly.

Great article! People need to be more responsible and keep up with themselves because in college your professors don't care if you're sick or not. If you miss too many classes they drop you from the roster.

I agree with your article. But also, at my old school you didnt have a limit on how many days you could miss and you could still pass a class as long as you kept up with your work. I feel like that is better for High School students.

Shelly you do have a great point, and i had no idea it was only three days. That's crazy! I think five days is just the right amount. That's 10 days a year, which sounds fair. And if kids are willing to miss over five days then they should be willing to go to make up school. Correct?

I personally believe five days is plenty, however, I agree that if you do keep up with your grades and make a passing grade in the class, then you should get the credit. Clearly the student worked hard and understood the material. Honestly, I learn more sometimes on my independent studies than I do here at school. I guess it just depends on the teacher, but regardless, great point Shelly, and great article!

I know it's hard for people to go to the doctors for every little thing to get a note because it's expensive. But you can't miss school for every little thing. Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do. Great article!
