At the end of the bottle

by Johnny Matthias
It’s always sad to see an idol fall from the graces of their once held fame and lose everything. What’s even worse is, this is not the first time it’s happened to the both beloved and hated Jonny Craig.

At this point, the now former lead singer of the well known progressive hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance is at the lowest point in his life. After checking himself into rehab in March 2011, being arrested for possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia in October later that year, it’s hard to say that I didn’t see this coming.

As of recently, a video of Jonny Craig using drugs was posted by a “friend”. His label, Rise Records, has dropped him as a solo artist and Dance Gavin Dance is forced to find a new replacement. Now wanted by U.S. authorities, Craig has fled to Canada.

I’ve personally been following the singers’ career for over two years now and there’s been a lot of controversy surrounding his name. When I first heard of him he was in the post-hardcore band Emarosa.

I knew very little about his addiction to drugs, which is why it came as a surprise to me later on in 2010 when he had been a part of an internet scam involving the sale (or lack there of) Macbooks on Twitter.

In the scam, Craig told over a dozen fans over Twitter that he would sell them Macbooks and after receiving the money (presumably for drugs) he never paid up.

In April of 2011, Jonny Craig was kicked out of Emarosa for the scandal and later elaborating that he was too much of a risk for the band’s image.

Craig is very well known and acclaimed for his voice and versatility. As most people are sad to see him spiral, many are just more angered that he’s done this to his loyal fans yet again.

Dance Gavin Dance is now forced to pick up the pieces as they have no choice. As of right now, no one has yet to hear from the singer and fans are left devastated and forced to move on as well.

As for me, a true fan of Craig’s work, I hope he can get his life together. Actions aside, his music has meant a lot to millions of people and it would be heartbreaking for to that end.

This is a really great article! When you showed me his songs I was amazed by how beautiful his voice was. I really hope he does get better with his drug habits. Love P.I.C.

He's still on the band, but won't be touring with DGD until he gets better.

This is really good, I like how you write about music.

Drugs cause to many problems for people. Even when the people have the best, they let drugs ruin it all.

It's always sad to hear about a talented artist throw their life away because of drugs and addictions. Great article Johnny.

This is a really good article. I hate how actors and singers get into all those drugs and ruin their life and everything that they've worked for. You did a good job Johnny!

Music is a great thing, but once drugs get involved things get serioius. It's a shame that he had to put his career on hold for that.
