The wonderful world of percussion

by Bryan Dean
The percussion section of the band is very vital and necessary in order to have full sound. Cory Douglas is the percussion extraordinaire of the St. James Band Program and gave me some insight on different instruments involved in percussion.

The snare drum has a very solid and high sound in order to be heard. Playing the snare involves precise and powerful strokes from both hands.
The xylophone involves the use of mallets to hit with gentle strokes. This is the key to creating the best sound through this instrument.
The tympani has a very distinct sound that is used for dramatic sounding melodies. In order to vary the pitch you use a foot pedal.
Another technique of hitting multiple notes on the xylophone is to hold the mallets in different fingers. This way of playing provides the option of including harmonies in your music.
Even from a distance you can hear the soothing melodies of the xylophone. This instrument is constantly used in the symphonic band.
Many play the tympani with speed. Speed and dynamic are key to this instrument.
Cory plays melodies on the Xylophone that overlap the band's sound. This is vital and very important to have.

I didnt know that the xylophone was played with two mallets in each hand, that looks very difficult.Great job Bryan, I really like your pictures and article.
