Teen pregnancy

by Kelsey Friedman
No one in high school is ready to have a baby. There is too much you have to accomplish and get done before you even think about starting a family and raising children.

Not to mention all the things you would miss out on because you have to sit at home and change diapers all night. And with all these ways of prevention you would think that not so many teen girls would become pregnant. Yet, way too many do each year.

This year alone 820,000 teen girls will become pregnant. 79 percent of these girls are unmarried mothers raising the children on their own. What’s sad is that this is a significant drop in teen pregnancies since the 1980’s.

I always wonder if there is really anything that can be done to help lower teen pregnancy. Yes, we could put thousands of dollars into prevention and awareness classes, but in the end if a teen girl wants to have sex, she is going to have sex regardless of how many people tell her she shouldn’t.

So what can be done to really get through to teen girls about the cost and risk of becoming a young mother? Teenhelp.com believes sharing some scary statistics might make people think twice about what’s really at risk.

For example, only 1/3 of teenage mothers actually completes high school and earns their diplomas, and out of that 1/3 only 1.5% of teen moms go on to complete College. Something that really surprised me was that sons of teenage moms have a greater chance of ending up in prison.

With all these scary statistics available to teens you would think pregnancy rates would decline. So why haven’t they? I believe it’s because teenagers have a mind set that things like becoming pregnant couldn’t possibly happen to them. When in reality it only takes having sex one time to become pregnant. And that one time could change your whole life.

I really enjoyed reading your article Kelsey. I think most teenagers don't use protection, or at least correctly. Condoms and if available the pill should be used to help prevent pregnancy.

It's really sad that those statistics exist and yet it continues to happen. I just don't understand why so many teens run the risk of pregnancy. Great job Kelsey

I'm glad someone covered this because there are so many girls getting pregnant. It sucks because whether the guy sticks around or doesn't the girl has to continue with the responsibility. Good job writing this.

This article is really good Kelsey. Some mothers have it rough and others.. well they just dont care about neither their babies or themselves. With all these risks you would think adoption would be a good option. Good job.

It pretty unbelievable how many teens i've seen pregnant this year, it's very sad. You did a great job getting a lot of facts and information. I learned a little from this.

Wow, this is a great. I know quite of few teen mothers myself and it's sad to see that they have to give up everything for making choices they wish they hadn't. Those statistics just make it even worse too.

You did a really good job Kelsey. I can't believe those statistics. No one in high school is ready for a baby, no matter how mature they think they are. Great article Kelsey!

I'm honestly surprised by these statistics. My mom was a teen mom and I have not followed in her footsteps, so I think that by having a young mother and her talking to be about prevention has definitely helped. Awesome article Kelsey.

These statistics are very eyeopening and very sad at the same time. You're right teen pregnancy is not something that a highschool girl can handle.

This was actually a very positive and helpful take on teen pregnancy. It was really nice to not hear someone bashing people for making bad decisions, this is a serious issue. And giving advice like this is wonderfully refreshing. Kelsey this was great!
