Has The Office run its course?
by Bryan Dean
Originally, The Office starred the renowned comedic actor Steve Carell who was perfect for his role as the Branch Manager. He starred on the show for seven consecutive seasons capturing his viewers in utter amusement.
In the Office’s seventh season Steve Carell left due to the ending of his contract with the show. His last episode entitled, “Goodbye Michael,” was aired April 28th, 2011.
After Steve Carell’s departure The Office found itself in a bit of a predicament trying to find an adequate yet different actor in order to lead The Office cast. After a handful of auditions involving different and comedic actors, The Office welcomed James Spader to its cast playing the role of “Robert California.”
The showing of season 8 is underway right now and so far The Office has released twelve episodes. However, many feel that the funny pranks and comedic vibe of Steve Carell is what made the show so special and original.
If you read reviews online, many say that The Office is dry and lost some of its comedic spirit that drew in so many viewers. Many of the characters have altered there own persona and it comes off as boring to the audience.
“This season of the Office isn’t as good as the first few seasons” said St. James graduate Katie Wiggins.
However, some say that they enjoy the new Office season. James Spader brings a new found desire of approval from the cast that was not really apparent during the time of Steve Carell.
“I think that they are doing a good job of replacing Steve Carell’s character. Although they are hitting some dry spots in the show, I am still enjoying it” said Mike Driver.
Could this be the final season of the office? Only time will tell.

Great article Bryan. I think the show isn't the same anymore without Steve. He really did make the show what it was. They had some very successful times but without him the show isn't The Office.
I dont think ever replacing anyone in shows ever turns up okay. I dont know if you watch That 70's Show but Eric and Jackie were just as big roles as the others but once they left, they tried to replace them and the show just went down hill from there. Sometimes things like this work out but when its big roles leaving the shows usually turn into crap. This was a good article though!
I agree completely. I used to watch the show every week and keep up with the episodes but ever since Steve Carrell left I haven't been watching the episodes as frequently or at all. I think Steve Carrell gave the show its wit and charm and ever since he left so did many other viewers.
Amazingly awesome article Bryan. Without Steve Carell, by far the best and funniest actor on the cast, the show will never be the same.
Good point Stephanie Panos. I've always loved the office, it's a lot different now without Steve, and can get lonely, but I feel the show still has a bunch of the great humor that keeps people salivating.
The Office has been one of my favorite shows for so long. I'll never get tired of "that's what she said" jokes. Really good article Bryan.
I have never seen The Office, but I might watch the older episodes with Steve Carell. I adore Steve as an actor so I bet the show would have been hilarious. That sucks that he was taken off!
I don't watch the office but i'm still sad that they replaced Steve. Great article!
