The Church of Rock and Roll
by Josh Royce
Cincinnati-based rock group Foxy Shazam is uprooting rock and roll music and bringing it back for the younger generation. Freddie Mercury would be proud.
Their newest release, “The Church of Rock and Roll” was released on Jan. 24, and it’s a record that stands strong among today’s dying music scene. Despite having a purely classic rock feel, there is so much more here to enjoy.
Foxy Shazam started out as a post-hardcore band, taking comfort in bringing their earlier fans an experimental and interesting new sound. In recent years however, it’s easy to tell where the majority of Foxys’ influence has come from.
This brand of current day Classic Rock was first brought to life in their 2010 self titled release. With that being their first actual record to land a spot on the charts, it’s no surprise they have continued to expand their already broad spectrum of Rock and Roll.
“The Church of Rock and Roll” plays out like a visit to the 1970’s. It’s filled with epic ballads, head banging power chords, and disco beats. Blaring this record will definitely bring you back a good 40 years or so. Nothing about this Rock and Roll church would be expected, or really welcomed alongside Katy Perry or Rihanna. Maybe that’s where the real genius of Foxy Shazams’ sound comes through.
Track by track, it’s hard to tell you’re even listening to the same band. Vocalist Eric Sean Nally certainly has a way of making himself stand out. With his unique falsettos and vocal throws, there are many layers to this record. Matching his voice to the wide use of instrumentation, nothing feels out of place. It’s all perfectly aligned and perfectly “rocking.”
Foxy Shazam has clearly found a nice little path for them to travel down. Rock and Roll greatness is where they are headed, and with a sound as unique and as expansive as their own? They have the potential to blast through every generation’s speakers. Pick up a copy of “The Church of Rock and Roll” now.
